They are available in over 140 countries and the FC2 has been on the market for exactly 10 years now, but hardly anyone knows them: female condoms. ‘A shame’, says Denise van Dijk from the Female Health Company. LINDA news gave her a call: ‘It does have to be inserted’.
The headquarters of the Female Health Company is located in Chicago. Denise is the only employee working from The Netherlands and is responsible for Europe.
Denise just got back from Ghana and Togo, where different projects on sexual and reproductive health education and female empowerment are up and running. The FHC has mainly been active in developing countries for the past 20 years, working with Ministries of Health and local charities. Now it is time to make the FC2 well known in the Western world.
Kills the mood
Lack of knowledge causes lack of support, but Denise claims that the female condom has many benefits. ‘It is made out nitrile which is three times stronger than latex. Nitrile also adapts to your body temperature and you can use lubricants made out of an oil base. These things are not the case with a latex condom’. What is also not unimportant: The inner ring of the condom is pleasurable for the man, while the outer ring stimulates the clitoris. ‘Plus, you can already insert the female condom a couple of hours in advance. This means, that as opposed to the male condom, you no longer have the excuse that using a condom kills the mood’.
Insert like a tampon
But to insert it, how does that work? ‘You just squeeze the inner ring together and you insert and push it in. It kind of works just like a tampon. In the beginning you think, no way, how does this work? But after a couple of times you know what works best for you and you forget that you found it difficult in the beginning.’ Denise tried the female condom herself as well, ‘of course’. ‘After testing it a couple of times I figured out pretty quickly how it best works for me’.
Reasonable
The FC2 is already available with some drug stores and pharmacies, but can also be ordered online. A packet of three condoms is around 5 Euro. Denise: ‘yes, more expensive than the male condom, but still very reasonable’.
